Berberine
Berberine is one of the best-studied natural compounds for blood sugar and cholesterol, with modest weight effects in some trials at 500 to 1,500 mg a day. It commonly causes digestive upset and interacts with many medicines.
Green tea EGCG
Green tea catechins may slightly increase energy expenditure and fat burning, especially combined with caffeine. High-dose extracts have been linked to rare liver problems.
Alpha lipoic acid
ALA is an antioxidant that helps cells use glucose. Some trials show small weight losses at 300 to 1,800 mg a day.
Banaba and chromium
Banaba contains corosolic acid, studied in small trials for blood sugar. Chromium helps insulin work; evidence for weight loss is weak.
Milk thistle, resveratrol, cayenne and ginseng
Milk thistle is a traditional liver herb, resveratrol an antioxidant, cayenne a mild thermogenic and ginseng a tonic for energy. Each has limited weight-loss evidence.
